Henna (in Morocco, harqus and henna designs) is woven into life's big moments — above all weddings, where the bride's "henna night" covers her hands and feet in intricate patterns for luck, protection and fertility. Away from celebrations, it is also simply a beautiful, temporary body art. A proper henna session lets you experience the tradition done well, by an artist who works freehand with a natural product.
The most important thing a good session guarantees is authenticity: pure henna paste made from dried, ground henna leaves mixed with water, lemon and sometimes a little sugar and essential oil. It stains the skin a rich orange-brown that deepens over a day or two and fades naturally over one to three weeks. Your artist will steer you firmly away from the fast, jet-black "henna" sometimes offered by touts in the square, which can contain PPD dye and cause skin reactions — real henna is never black.
You choose your design from the Moroccan repertoire: geometric Amazigh motifs, floral and paisley patterns, or the flowing bridal-style work that climbs the hands and wrists. The neqqasha pipes the paste freehand from a cone or syringe, building the pattern with remarkable speed and control while explaining the symbolism as she goes. You then let it dry and set before gently flaking it off to reveal the stain beneath.
Sessions run in a calm riad or studio setting rather than a busy souk stall, so you can relax over mint tea while the henna is applied and dries. It is a favourite for brides-to-be, hen parties, families and anyone wanting a genuine, safe souvenir worn on the skin.
