About this experience

In Morocco the hammam is not a spa treat but a way of life: a communal steam bathhouse rooted in the culture, where locals go regularly to get properly clean, socialise and relax. Traditional neighbourhood hammams sit beside mosques, often sharing the wood-fired furnace that heats the water, and the ritual follows the same sequence it has for generations. This experience gives you that authentic ritual with guidance, so the etiquette and the steps are never a mystery.

The process is built around three traditional products. First comes savon beldi (also called savon noir), a soft, dark paste of crushed black olives and olive oil, smoothed over the skin and left to work in the steam. Then the scrubbing: a kessa, a coarse exfoliating mitt, is used to slough away the softened dead skin — the famously satisfying (and slightly startling) core of the hammam, which leaves you cleaner than you thought possible. Finally, ghassoul (rhassoul) — a mineral-rich volcanic clay mined in the Atlas — is used as a cleansing mask for skin and hair.

You move through the hammam's warm, humid rooms, letting the steam open the pores before each stage, and buckets of warm water rinse everything away between steps. Depending on the setting, an attendant (a tayeba) may perform the scrub for you, or you may do it yourself with instruction. It is deeply cleansing and relaxing, and it is a genuine window onto everyday Moroccan life that most visitors never step into.

We can arrange either an authentic neighbourhood hammam for the real, no-frills local experience, or a more comfortable mid-range hammam with private rooms and towels provided if you prefer. Hammams are single-sex or have separate hours for men and women. Bring or hire a towel and flip-flops, expect to wear swimwear or underwear, and drink water afterwards — you will feel wonderfully wrung out and renewed.
