About this experience
This is the traditional Moroccan hammam elevated into a full spa ritual — the same authentic sequence of black soap, exfoliation and clay, but delivered in the calm, private, comfortable setting of a spa or upscale riad hammam, and extended with a massage. It is the ideal choice if you want the genuine cleansing ritual without the busy, no-frills atmosphere of a neighbourhood bathhouse, and a proper unwind on top.
The ritual follows the authentic steps, performed by a trained therapist. You relax in the warm steam room to open the pores, then savon beldi — the soft black soap of crushed olives and olive oil — is applied and left to work. The therapist then scrubs you with the kessa, the coarse exfoliating glove, sloughing away dead skin until it is astonishingly smooth. A ghassoul (rhassoul) clay mask, the mineral-rich Atlas volcanic clay, is smoothed over skin and hair as a cleansing, softening wrap, then rinsed away with warm water. Rose or orange-blossom water often finishes the cleanse.
The package then adds a massage to complete the experience. Typically this is a relaxing full-body massage with pure Moroccan argan oil — the prized cosmetic oil rich in vitamin E — leaving the skin nourished after the deep exfoliation, though other oils or styles can usually be arranged. Wrapped in a robe with mint tea afterward, you emerge deeply relaxed, thoroughly cleansed and glowing, in one of the most restorative couple of hours you can spend in the city.
