Tizi n'Test Pass Day Trip from Marrakech — a day trip from Marrakech
Distance: About 220 km round trip
Best season: May–October; the pass can close briefly after winter snow
Best for: Travellers who love dramatic mountain roads and big views

Overview

The Tizi n'Test is one of the world's great mountain roads — a narrow, endlessly switchbacking route that hauls itself over the High Atlas at 2,092 metres before dropping in a single dramatic sweep toward the Souss valley and, in clear weather, views that stretch to the Anti-Atlas. Built by French engineers in the 1920s along an ancient trans-Atlas route, it remains a serious, thrilling drive rather than a gentle sightseeing loop, and a day spent on it is a day spent almost entirely in the mountains.

From Marrakech the road climbs steadily through Asni and the N'Fis valley, past Ouirgane and Tin Mal, before the real switchbacks begin. The final approach to the summit is relentless — hairpin after hairpin cut into near-vertical slopes, with sheer drops on one side and rock face on the other, all on a narrow road that demands full concentration from the driver.

At the top, the Tizi n'Test summit delivers one of the great panoramas of Moroccan mountain travel: the High Atlas falling away behind you, and ahead, on a clear day, the flat sweep of the Souss valley thousands of feet below, with the Anti-Atlas a hazy line on the horizon. A small roadside café at the summit is the traditional stop for mint tea and the view.

Because the drive itself is the destination, this day works best as an out-and-back or combined with Tin Mal Mosque, which sits on the same road below the pass. Some travellers use the Tizi n'Test as a one-way link toward Taroudant rather than a there-and-back day — ask about a longer combined itinerary if that interests you.

Highlights

  • The 2,092 m Tizi n'Test summit, one of the most dramatic road crossings in Morocco
  • Relentless hairpin bends carved into the mountainside by French engineers
  • Sweeping views down over the Souss valley toward Taroudant and the Anti-Atlas
  • Tin Mal Mosque on the same route, if you want to combine both

Frequently asked questions

How high is the Tizi n'Test pass?

2,092 metres — lower than the Tizi n'Tichka further east, but arguably more dramatic, with tighter hairpins and steeper drops on the approach to the summit from the Marrakech side.

Is the Tizi n'Test road dangerous?

It is narrow, winding and has sheer drops in places, which makes it a serious drive, but it is a well-maintained, regularly used road when driven by an experienced local driver at sensible speed. Self-driving it is not recommended for inexperienced mountain drivers.

Can the Tizi n'Test be combined with Tin Mal Mosque?

Yes, and it usually is — Tin Mal sits directly on the route below the summit, so most day trips take in the mosque on the way up or down as part of the same drive.

When does the Tizi n'Test close?

Occasionally after heavy winter snow at the summit, though closures are usually brief. The road is at its most reliably clear and comfortable from May to October; your driver will always check conditions before setting out in winter.
