Erg Chigaga is the Sahara for people who've done their homework. Far larger and wilder than the dunes at Zagora — and much less visited than Merzouga — this remote dune sea lies beyond M'Hamid, where the tarmac ends and you cross open desert by 4x4 to reach it. Fewer camps, fewer people, bigger dunes and darker skies: this is the connoisseur's Moroccan desert.
The route runs south over the Tizi n'Tichka, past Aït Ben Haddou and down the beautiful Draa Valley through Zagora to M'Hamid — the last village before the sand. From there it's an off-road 4x4 traverse across gravel plains and dry riverbeds to the towering dunes of Erg Chigaga, a journey that feels like a proper expedition.
Because it's remote, Erg Chigaga stays wonderfully uncrowded. Camps are more spread out and lower-key, the dunes are vast, and the night skies — far from any town — are among the darkest and most star-filled in Morocco. Days bring camel treks, dune walks, sandboarding and visits to nomad families or the odd desert oasis.
It's a longer, rougher, more adventurous trip than the standard tours, and best done privately by 4x4 with a driver who knows the terrain.
