Marrakech is a backpacker favourite because almost everything is cheaper than you expect. A dorm bed costs 80-150 MAD (8-15 EUR), a filling meal at a local restaurant is 30-50 MAD, and many of the best experiences — the souks, the square, the gardens — are free.
The trick is knowing where locals eat, which shared tours offer real value, and how to avoid the tourist traps that inflate prices.

Hostels in the medina start from 80 MAD/night. The best ones have rooftop terraces, communal kitchens and social events. Gueliz has cheaper options but is further from the action.
Where to eat
Skip the tourist restaurants on Jemaa el-Fnaa. The side streets one block away serve the same food at half the price. A tagine in a local spot costs 30-40 MAD.
Free things to do
Walk the souks, explore the mellah, watch sunset from a free rooftop cafe, visit the Koutoubia exterior, and browse the tanneries (free entry, tip expected).
Shared day trips
Join a shared minibus to the Ourika Valley (from 150 MAD) or Ouzoud Waterfalls (from 200 MAD). Same trip as a private tour, a fraction of the cost.

Common questions
How cheap is Marrakech for backpackers?
Very. A comfortable backpacker day costs 200-300 MAD (20-30 EUR): hostel, three meals, transport and one shared activity. You can go lower if you self-cater and stick to free activities.
Is Marrakech safe for backpackers?
Generally yes. The medina is safe during the day. At night, stick to main streets. Petty theft (pickpocketing) is the main risk — keep valuables in an inside pocket. Solo female backpackers should read our solo female travel guide.
Should I haggle everywhere?
In the souks, yes — it is expected and part of the fun. In restaurants and for transport, prices are usually fixed. Our haggling guide has more tips.
Can I get by without French?
Yes. Most people in tourist areas speak some English. A few words of French or Darija (Moroccan Arabic) help — 'shukran' (thank you) and 'bslama' (goodbye) go a long way.
