Gnaoua Music Experience in Marrakech — Guembri & Qraqeb

About this experience

Gnaoua (Gnawa) music is one of Morocco's most distinctive sounds — deep, trance-inducing and instantly recognisable from the loping bass line of the guembri and the metallic clacking of iron castanets. It grew from the spiritual and healing traditions of West and sub-Saharan African communities brought to Morocco centuries ago, fused with Moroccan and Islamic Sufi practice, and in 2019 it was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This experience brings you face to face with the living tradition.

At the heart of it are the instruments. The maâlem (master musician) plays the guembri (also called sintir or hajhouj) — a three-stringed skin-covered bass lute that carries the melody and pulse. Around him the group plays the qraqeb, heavy iron castanets whose relentless clatter drives the rhythm, and often the tbel drum. The musicians explain how the instruments are made and how the interlocking patterns build the hypnotic, layered groove.

You do not just listen — you take part. The musicians teach you to hold and strike the qraqeb, to feel the polyrhythm, and to follow the call-and-response singing. They talk through the culture: the lila (all-night ceremony), the sequence of spirit colours and songs, and how Gnaoua moved from private ritual into festivals and the world-music stage, above all the huge annual Gnaoua World Music Festival held each summer in Essaouira on the coast.

Sessions run in a riad, a private music room or a Gnaoua family's own space in the Medina, in an intimate setting rather than a big stage show. It suits music lovers, families and anyone curious about the roots of Moroccan sound, and it usually ends with mint tea and time to talk with the musicians about their craft and lineage.
