Leather Craft Workshop in Marrakech — Make Babouche or a Bag

Leather is one of Marrakech's signature crafts, and the city's tanneries and leather souks have supplied slippers, bags, poufs and belts for centuries. While Fez is home to the most famous tanneries, Marrakech has its own working tannery quarter near Bab Debbagh, where hides are still cured in stone vats using lime and natural agents. A leather workshop connects that raw material to the finished object by putting the tools in your hands.

The session begins with the material and its story: how hides (goat, sheep, cow and camel) are tanned, softened and dyed, and how the leather souk grades and sells them. The artisan then walks you through the making of a real object — most often the iconic pointed babouche slippers, or a pouch, card holder or small bag — showing how the pieces are cut from a pattern, the edges skived, and the seams stitched by hand with a saddle stitch and waxed thread.

Under the artisan's guidance you do the work yourself: marking and cutting the leather, punching the holes, and stitching and finishing your piece. It is patient, tactile work that gives you a real appreciation for why a handmade Moroccan bag or slipper is built to last, and for the skill behind the goods stacked in the souk stalls. Traditional tools — the awl, the round knife, wooden burnishers and hand punches — are all provided.

You leave with the item you made and a sharper eye for quality leather, which makes any later souk shopping far smarter — you will know real vegetable-tanned hide from cheap coated stuff, and a hand-stitched seam from a glued one. Wear clothes you do not mind marking, and expect to slow down and enjoy the process; good leather work rewards patience.
