Reaching it means crossing the Tizi n'Test pass, which makes this one of the longest standard day trips from Marrakech — but for travellers who want an authentic walled city without another soul in sight, it delivers something the busier south often can't.
The drive climbs over the Tizi n'Test pass — itself a spectacular experience, all hairpins and Souss-valley views — before descending into the flat, fertile plain around Taroudant, ringed by orange, olive and pomegranate groves fed by irrigation from the Atlas snowmelt. It is around three and a half to four hours each way, making Taroudant a genuinely long haul.
The city's 16th-century ramparts, nearly 7.5 kilometres in circuit, are among the best preserved in Morocco, and a short calèche (horse-drawn carriage) ride around them is a popular way to take in their scale. Inside, two souks — one Arab, one Berber — trade in leather, jewellery, spices and produce with a fraction of the hustle of Marrakech's medina.
