Quad Biking in Marrakech (Palmeraie & Agafay)

Quad biking is the most popular adventure add-on in Marrakech — a couple of hours on an automatic ATV, kicking up dust through the palmeraie or across the lunar landscape of the Agafay desert. It needs zero experience, the quads are automatic, and it is close enough to the city to slot into any afternoon.

Three helmeted riders following a rocky quad-bike trail in the Agafay Desert with the High Atlas in the distance

Overview

There are two classic settings. The Palmeraie, just north of the city, is a patchwork of palm groves, dusty tracks and Berber villages — greener, shadier and gentler, ideal for first-timers. The Agafay desert, about 40 minutes south-west, swaps palms for rolling stony hills that look like the Sahara without the long drive, with wide-open trails and Atlas views.

You get a full briefing and a practice loop before setting off, then ride in a line behind a lead guide with a sweep rider at the back. The quads are automatic twist-and-go machines, so there is no gear-changing to worry about — it is genuinely beginner-friendly.

Most trips run about two hours of riding with a stop for mint tea at a Berber house, and many operators let you combine quads with a camel ride or buggy in the same outing. Transfers from your hotel are usually included.

How it runs

A typical outing runs about Half day (about 2 hours riding). Here is the usual shape of it:

  1. 1

    Pick-up & kit

Hotel transfer to the base, then helmets and a scarf against the dust.

  2. 2

    Briefing & practice

Controls explained and a short practice loop until you are comfortable.

  3. 3

    The ride

Around two hours on the trails behind a guide — palm groves or open Agafay desert.

  4. 4

    Tea break & return

A stop for mint tea at a Berber house before the transfer back to your hotel.

What to expect

Expect dust, sun and a big grin. The pace is set by the group, so it stays manageable, but you can open up on the straights once the guide is happy.

Expect to get dirty — wear clothes you do not mind covering in fine desert dust, and bring a buff or scarf for your face.

What's included

  • Return hotel transfers in the Marrakech area
  • Automatic quad bike and fuel
  • Helmet, and usually a dust scarf
  • Guide, and a mint-tea break

What to bring

  • Sunglasses (essential against dust) and sunscreen
  • A buff, scarf or bandana for your nose and mouth
  • Closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty
  • A little cash for the tea stop and tips

Safety notes

  • You must be sober to drive; alcohol and quads never mix. Under-16s ride as a passenger with an adult or guide.
  • Wear the helmet at all times and keep to the line and speed the guide sets, especially on loose or rocky ground.
  • Riding is standard practice for beginners, but respect that a quad is heavy — brake early and take corners slowly.
  • Tell the operator about any wrist, shoulder or back issues; the terrain can be jarring.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to quad bike in Marrakech?

No licence is needed for the guided off-road trips. The quads are automatic and you get instruction and a practice loop first. You do usually need to be 16+ to drive your own; younger children ride as passengers.

Is the Palmeraie or Agafay better for quad biking?

The Palmeraie is greener, shadier and gentler — great for first-timers and shorter afternoons. Agafay is open, stony desert with Atlas views and a more dramatic, Sahara-like feel, about 40 minutes further out.

What should I wear for quad biking?

Closed shoes, clothes you do not mind getting dusty, sunglasses and a scarf or buff for your face. It gets dusty and sunny, so sunscreen and water are worth bringing too.
