Overview
Most Erg Chigaga trips approach from M'Hamid in the east; this one comes in from the west, via Foum Zguid and the strange, cracked-earth expanse of the dry Lac Iriki lakebed. It's a genuinely different feel — flat, mirage-prone desert flats giving way to the same towering dunes, but reached by a route that sees only a handful of vehicles a day even in high season.
From Marrakech the road runs south through the Anti-Atlas to Foum Zguid, a small gateway town where the tarmac gives out. From here the 4x4 heads onto the open desert, crossing the vast, usually bone-dry bed of Lac Iriki — a seasonal lake that fills only in exceptional rains, otherwise a cracked, pale expanse that plays tricks with heat-haze and distance.
Beyond the lakebed the ground rises into the western reaches of the Erg Chigaga dune sea, reached from a direction most visitors never see. Camps here are simple and remote, with the same immense dunes and dark skies as the classic M'Hamid approach, but an even lower chance of encountering another group.
It's a route for drivers who know the desert well — there are no fixed tracks across the lakebed, only compass bearings and experience — and for travellers who find the idea of an alternate, quieter gateway into Chigaga more appealing than the busier eastern approach. Two nights allow time to properly absorb the dunes before the return crossing.
