Berber Carpet Weaving Lesson in Marrakech — Loom & Knot

The rugs piled high in the Marrakech souks are the product of one of Morocco's deepest craft traditions: Amazigh (Berber) weaving, done overwhelmingly by women on upright looms in the villages of the High Atlas, the Middle Atlas and the plains beyond. A weaving lesson takes you behind the sales patter of the carpet souk and shows you the slow, skilled reality of how a single rug is built.

You start with the raw material — wool, often hand-spun and coloured with natural dyes such as madder root for red, indigo for blue, henna and pomegranate for yellows and browns. The weaver shows how the warp is strung on the loom and how the rug grows row by row, whether it is a dense pile carpet tied knot by knot or a flatwoven kilim (hanbel). Then she guides your hands as you add your own rows of weft to a working piece.

Part of the lesson is learning to read the rugs. Amazigh carpets are not random decoration — the diamonds, chevrons, crosses and zigzags carry meaning tied to fertility, protection, water, the evil eye and the weaver's own life and region. Your host explains how to tell the main rug types apart — the shaggy cream Beni Ourain of the Middle Atlas, the vivid Boucherouite made from recycled fabric, the flatwoven Zanafi and Glaoui — so you can shop with real understanding afterwards.

Lessons usually run in a Medina workshop or a women's weaving cooperative, and many pair the hands-on session with mint tea and an honest, no-pressure look at finished rugs. You come away with a small woven sample of your own work and, more valuably, the knowledge to judge quality, spot machine-made fakes, and appreciate why a genuine hand-knotted carpet costs what it does.
