About this experience

Marrakech has a deep relationship with fragrance, from the rosewater and orange-blossom water splashed over guests to the amber, musk and oud that scent riads and hammams. A perfume-making atelier turns that heritage into a hands-on hour, led by a perfumer who understands both the traditional Moroccan materials and the craft of building a balanced scent.

You begin with the raw palette. The perfumer introduces the classic Moroccan notes — Damask rose (Morocco's rose valley near Kelaâ M'Gouna supplies the famous spring harvest), neroli and orange blossom, jasmine, cedarwood from the Atlas, amber, musk and warm spices — laid out on scent strips so you can train your nose. You learn how a perfume is structured in top, heart and base notes, and how the fleeting citrus top gives way to a floral heart and a lingering woody-amber base.

Then you build your own. Guided by the perfumer, you sample and combine oils, adjusting the balance until you have a blend you love, and bottle it to carry home. Depending on the atelier you may work with alcohol-based eau de parfum or with the traditional oil-based attar — a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil rolled onto the skin, as worn across Morocco and the wider region. Either way the scent is uniquely yours.

The session also opens a window onto how fragrance lives in Moroccan culture — the herbalists and attar sellers of the Mellah and the spice souk, the role of scent in hospitality and celebration, and how natural materials are distilled and traded. It suits couples, friends and anyone who loves scent, and you leave with a personal bottle plus a much sharper nose.

Frequently asked questions

Do I take home the perfume I make?

Yes. You blend and bottle your own personal fragrance during the session and carry it home, along with a much better sense of how scents are built from top, heart and base notes.

What kinds of scents will I work with?

Classic Moroccan materials such as rose, orange blossom, jasmine, Atlas cedar, amber, musk and warm spices. The perfumer helps you find a balance you love, whether fresh, floral or warm and woody.

Is it alcohol-based or oil-based?

Depending on the atelier you may make an alcohol-based eau de parfum or a traditional oil-based attar — a concentrated, alcohol-free perfume oil worn on the skin. Tell us if you have a preference.
