Zellige Tile Workshop in Marrakech — Cut Your Own Mosaic

Zellige is the mosaic art you see everywhere in Marrakech — sheathing fountains, framing doorways, running up the walls of riads and covering the courtyards of monuments like the Ben Youssef Medersa and the Bahia Palace. What looks like painted pattern is actually thousands of individually hand-cut pieces of glazed terracotta, fitted together face-down without a single machine cut. A workshop lets you see, and try, how it is actually made.

The craft begins with the maâlem and his chisel. Working from a fired, glazed tile, the craftsman scores and chips it into furmah — the small standardised shapes (stars, chevrons, batons, keys) that combine into the endless geometric patterns. You learn why the cutting is done with the glaze facing up, how the shapes are named, and how a limited set of pieces can generate the dizzying interlacing stars that define the style. Then, under close guidance, you try the chisel yourself.

The workshop also opens up the meaning of the geometry: how the patterns radiate from a central star and repeat outward, how colour was historically limited to a few natural glazes (white, blue, green, yellow, terracotta) before the modern palette expanded, and why zellige remains a protected craft passed down through Fez and Marrakech workshops. It is humbling work — the maâlems train for years — but even a first attempt teaches your eye to read the walls of the city differently.

You assemble and take home a small finished piece such as a trivet, coaster or framed panel that you cut and set yourself. Sessions run in craft studios and cooperatives on the edge of the Medina; wear clothes you do not mind getting dusty, because chipping glazed tile is messy, hands-on work.
