Petit taxis are the small (usually beige in Marrakech) cabs that buzz around the city. They're metered by law, carry up to three passengers, and can't leave the city limits — they're your default for hopping between the medina, Gueliz, the train station and so on. Grand taxis are older Mercedes estates that seat more, used for longer journeys, airport transfers and shared inter-city routes where they run fixed fares and often wait to fill up with passengers heading the same way.

Fares and the meter game

Petit-taxi trips within the city are genuinely cheap — most come to 20–50 MAD on the meter. The catch is that drivers frequently 'forget' the meter for tourists and quote an inflated flat fare. The fix is simple and polite: as you get in, ask for the compteur (meter). If they refuse, agree a price before you move or wave down another cab — there's never a shortage. A higher night tariff (roughly 50% more) legitimately applies after 8pm, so don't mistake that for a scam.

Marrakech Menara airport is close to the centre, so a fair taxi fare to a medina riad is around 70–100 MAD — but the airport is where meter-dodging is most common, so agree the price before you get in. For a hassle-free arrival, especially on a late flight, a pre-booked private transfer meets you with a name board at a fixed price and, unlike a taxi, can navigate you to the nearest point to your riad where staff will collect you. Within the medina itself, remember that cars can't enter the narrow lanes, so you'll walk the last stretch either way.
