Toubkal Base Camp Day Trip from Marrakech — a day trip from Marrakech
Distance: About 130 km round trip driving, plus a long mountain walk
Best season: April–October; snow and ice on the upper path outside this window
Best for: Fit, active travellers who want a serious mountain day without an overnight

Overview

This is as far as you can push a single day into Toubkal country. From Imlil the trail climbs steadily beside the Mizane river, through the last orchards and into bare, boulder-strewn high mountain terrain, reaching the pilgrimage shrine of Sidi Chamharouch at 2,300 metres — the usual turnaround point for a strong day walk. You won't stand on the 4,167-metre summit, but you will walk deep into the massif that produces it, with the peaks towering directly overhead.

The route follows the same mule track used by trekkers heading to the Toubkal refuges, climbing out of Imlil through walnut groves and the hamlet of Around before the trees give way to open, rocky valley. It is a proper mountain walk — steady, at altitude, on uneven ground — not a stroll, and a local mountain guide is essential.

Sidi Chamharouch is a striking sight: a whitewashed shrine perched on a giant boulder in the riverbed, a pilgrimage site for Moroccans that also marks the last village-like stop before the trail becomes true high mountain. From here the path continues toward the refuges at around 3,200 metres, but a day trip turns back here or a little beyond, with the summit route visible ahead.

It is a demanding day — five to six hours of walking split across the ascent and descent, at altitudes where the air is noticeably thinner — but it rewards fit travellers with a real sense of the mountain rather than a photo from the village. Mules can carry a tired walker or bags on the way back for those who need them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reach the Toubkal summit on a day trip from Marrakech?

No — summiting Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m) requires an overnight at the Toubkal refuge and is a two-day minimum trek. This day trip walks deep into the massif to Sidi Chamharouch and the approach to the refuges, which is the realistic and still spectacular day-trip version.

How hard is the walk to Sidi Chamharouch?

It is a genuine mountain walk of around three hours up and two back, on a well-trodden but steadily climbing mule track, reaching 2,300 metres. It is not technical, but you should be a confident, fit walker comfortable with sustained ascent and altitude.

Do I need a guide?

Yes. A local mountain guide is essential for this route — for pacing, altitude awareness, safe turnaround decisions and knowledge of the trail, which changes with weather and season.

What is Sidi Chamharouch?

A Sufi pilgrimage shrine built around a large white-painted boulder in the riverbed at 2,300 metres, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the High Atlas and the last real stopping point before the trail becomes high mountain terrain toward the Toubkal refuges.
