Avoid tourist traps

The Marrakech souks are one of the largest traditional markets in the world — a labyrinth of covered alleys radiating from Jemaa el-Fnaa, each one specialised: leather here, spices there, ceramics around the corner, textiles further in.

Shopping here is an experience in itself. But it helps to know what is genuinely good quality, what a fair price looks like and which areas of the souk to prioritise. A guided souk tour on your first visit is one of the smartest bookings you can make.

What's included

Guided souk tour

A local guide takes you through the souk district by district, explains what to look for and helps you negotiate. The best way to learn the market.

Leather goods

Marrakech leather is famous worldwide. The tanneries dye hides using centuries-old methods. Look for bags, belts, pouffes and babouche slippers in the leather souk near Bab Debbagh.

Spices

Ras el hanout, cumin, saffron, dried rosebuds — the spice souk is aromatic and photogenic. Buy from established shops rather than street vendors for quality.

Ceramics and zellige

Safi and Fes-style ceramics — tagine pots, plates, bowls and tiles. The colourful hand-painted pieces make excellent souvenirs.

Berber rugs

Handwoven Berber rugs range from 500 to 5,000+ MAD depending on size, knot count and age. A guide helps you distinguish genuine craft from factory production.

Common questions

How much should I haggle?

Start at about 30-40% of the asking price and work toward 50-60%. Walking away is a legitimate tactic. If you are happy with the price and the seller is happy, it is a fair deal.

Is the souk safe from scams?

Most vendors are honest business people. The main risks are overcharging (hence haggling), fake goods (especially 'antique' items) and unsolicited guides who expect payment. A booked guide prevents the last issue.

Can I pay by card in the souks?

Very few souk stalls accept cards. Bring cash (MAD). ATMs are available nearby in Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz.

How do I ship a rug home?

Most rug shops arrange international shipping. DHL and FedEx have offices in Gueliz. Expect to pay 300-600 MAD for shipping a medium rug to Europe.
