Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech
North Africa's most spectacular waterfalls — 110 metres of cascading tiers, a boat ride at the base and Barbary monkeys in the olive groves.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are the tallest and most dramatic waterfalls in Morocco — three tiers of white water dropping 110 metres into a gorge surrounded by olive trees and red sandstone. They are about 2.5 hours northeast of Marrakech in the Middle Atlas.
A day trip includes a guided hike down to the base where you can take a small boat through the spray, spot wild Barbary macaques in the trees and eat a riverside lunch. It is a genuinely beautiful day out and one of the most popular excursions from Marrakech.
What's included
Guided waterfall hike
A local guide leads you along the gorge rim and down stone steps to the base of the falls. The hike is moderate — about 30 minutes down, longer coming back up.
Boat ride through the spray
At the base, small wooden boats take you across the plunge pool and right through the mist. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone.
Barbary macaques
Wild Barbary monkeys live in the olive groves around the falls. They are used to visitors and often come close — a hit with kids and photographers.
Riverside lunch
Several small restaurants perch above the gorge with tables overlooking the falls. Tagine, salads and fresh juice with a spectacular view.

Common questions
How far are the Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech?
About 150 km northeast, taking roughly 2.5 hours by road. The drive passes through interesting countryside and small towns.
Can you swim at Ouzoud?
Yes — there is a natural pool at the base of the lower falls where swimming is possible in warmer months (April-October). The water is cold.
Is the hike difficult?
It is moderate. The descent is on stone steps and can be slippery when wet. Most reasonably fit people manage it fine. The climb back up is steeper and takes 20-30 minutes.
Are the falls worth the long drive?
Absolutely. Ouzoud is consistently rated one of the top day trips from Marrakech. The scale of the waterfalls, the monkeys, the boat ride and the natural scenery make it a memorable day.
Best time to visit Ouzoud?
Spring (March-May) when the water flow is strongest. Summer is fine but the drive is hot. The falls run year-round but can slow to a trickle in late autumn.
