Overview
The Ourika Valley is Marrakech's favourite quick escape — a green river valley in the High Atlas foothills, less than an hour from the city, where the temperature drops, the air freshens and cafés cling to the banks of a rushing river. It is easy, scenic and endlessly popular, ending at the village of Setti Fatma and its chain of seven waterfalls.
The road follows the Ourika river as it climbs, past fruit stalls, pottery sellers and riverside restaurants with tables set right in the shallows. Along the way you can visit an argan-oil women's cooperative, stop at a Berber home for mint tea, and admire the terraced fields and mud-brick villages stacked up the valley sides.
At the top lies Setti Fatma, where a scramble up the rocks leads to the first of seven waterfalls — the first is an easy 20–30 minute climb, the higher ones steeper and quieter. Local guides wait at the trailhead to lead the way, which is worth it for the tricky sections.
It is the most accessible of the Atlas day trips: minimal driving, a genuine cool-down in summer, and something for everyone — river lunch, gentle walking and Berber culture. Spring is spectacular, with full rivers and wildflowers; even in winter the lower valley stays mild and green.

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
About 60–70 km, or under an hour to the lower valley and roughly 90 minutes to Setti Fatma at the top. The short drive is a big part of its appeal — you get real mountain scenery without a long day in the car.
Can you swim in the Ourika Valley?
You can paddle and cool off in the river shallows, and many cafés set their tables right in the water. It is not a deep swimming spot, but on a hot day dipping your feet in the cold snow-melt river is the whole point.
How hard is the Setti Fatma waterfall walk?
The first of the seven waterfalls is a 20–30 minute scramble over rocks — moderate, and easier with a local guide for the tricky bits. The higher falls are steeper and quieter. Wear shoes with grip, as the rocks are often wet.
Is the Ourika Valley good for families?
Excellent. The drive is short, the river is fun for kids, the walking is optional and there is plenty of space to relax. Just supervise children near the river and on the waterfall rocks.
