Overview
Zagora is the Sahara for those short on time. It is the closest true desert to Marrakech, reachable in a single day's drive, which makes a 2-day tour a genuine, unrushed way to ride a camel into the sand and sleep at a desert camp under the stars. The dunes are smaller than Merzouga's giants, but the palm-lined Draa Valley on the way is one of Morocco's most beautiful drives.
Day one crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, then turns south to follow the Draa Valley — a 200-kilometre ribbon of date palms, kasbahs and river greenery threading through the desert. It is a gorgeous drive, and shorter than the run to Merzouga.
By late afternoon you reach the dunes near Zagora or Tinfou and swap to a camel for the sunset trek into the sand. At camp there's a Berber dinner, drumming round the fire and a sky ablaze with stars — the full desert-night experience, close enough that day two isn't an all-day slog home.
It is the best-value quick Sahara from Marrakech: you sacrifice the sheer scale of Erg Chebbi's dunes, but gain a shorter, gentler trip and the wonderful Draa oasis. Ideal if you have two days rather than three, or simply want less time in the car.

Is Zagora or Merzouga better?
Zagora is closer (a comfortable 2-day trip) with a beautiful palm-valley drive but smaller dunes; Merzouga has the huge classic dunes but needs a longer, more driving-heavy 2–3 days. Short on time, choose Zagora; set on the biggest dunes, choose Merzouga.
How far is Zagora from Marrakech?
About 360 km, roughly 7 hours' drive via the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the Draa Valley. It is the closest true Sahara to the city, which is why an unrushed 2-day tour works so well — day two isn't an exhausting all-day return.
Are the Zagora dunes smaller than Merzouga's?
Yes. The dunes near Zagora and Tinfou are modest compared with the towering Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. You still get a genuine camel trek, a desert camp and sunrise over sand — just at a smaller, gentler scale, in exchange for much less driving.
Can Zagora be done in one day?
It is possible as a very long single day (14+ hours) to see the Draa Valley and dunes, but you'd miss the desert-camp night, which is the best part. Two days is far more rewarding and still one of the shortest Sahara options from Marrakech.
