Agafay Desert Experiences from Marrakech
A rocky desert landscape with Atlas Mountain views — just 45 minutes from Marrakech. Sunsets, camel rides, quad bikes and starlit dinners.
The Agafay desert is not the Sahara — it is a rocky, moon-like landscape about 40 km south of Marrakech with sweeping views of the Atlas Mountains. But what it lacks in sand dunes it makes up for in convenience: you can leave your riad at 4pm and be watching the sunset from a camel or a quad bike by 5pm.
Agafay is the desert experience for people who do not have time for the 3-day Sahara trip. The sunsets are extraordinary, the dinner camps are atmospheric, and the stargazing (away from city lights) is genuinely impressive.

Common questions
Is Agafay a real desert?
It is a rocky, arid landscape — technically a stone desert (hammada), not a sand desert. There are no dunes. The scenery is dramatic and beautiful in its own right, especially with the Atlas backdrop.
Agafay vs Merzouga — which should I do?
If you want sand dunes and the classic Sahara, Merzouga (3 days). If you have limited time and want a convenient desert taste with sunset and dinner, Agafay (half day). They are complementary, not competing.
Is it cold in the desert at night?
In winter (November-February), yes — bring a warm jacket. In summer, evenings are pleasantly warm. Camps provide blankets for overnight stays.
Can children do Agafay activities?
Yes. Camel rides are suitable from age 4 (with a parent). Quad bikes have a minimum age of 16, but kids can ride as passengers from about 6. Dinner camps welcome all ages.
