Overview
Essaouira is the anti-Marrakech: where the city is hot, red and frenetic, this Atlantic port is breezy, blue-and-white and wonderfully laid-back. A day trip trades the Medina's intensity for sea ramparts, a walkable UNESCO old town, a working fishing harbour and the freshest grilled fish you'll eat in Morocco. The two-and-a-half-hour drive passes argan groves — and, if you're lucky, goats up in the trees.
The drive west crosses the Chiadma plains, dotted with argan trees. A classic stop is a women's argan cooperative, where you can watch the oil being pressed and, nearby, sometimes spot goats balanced improbably in the branches nibbling the fruit. You reach the coast in about two and a half to three hours.
Essaouira itself is made for wandering. The compact medina, ringed by 18th-century ramparts, is easy and flat, with artisan workshops (it is famous for thuya-wood marquetry), galleries and squares. Walk the Skala sea bastion above the waves, watch the blue fishing boats unload, and pick your lunch straight off the ice at the harbour grills.
It is a long day on the road but an easy one on foot, and the change of pace and climate is the whole appeal. Kitesurfers love the wind; everyone else loves the seafood, the light and the relaxed, arty atmosphere. Give yourself a good four or five hours in town to enjoy it properly.
