Lalla Takerkoust Lake Day Trip from Marrakech — a day trip from Marrakech
Distance: About 80 km round trip
Best season: Spring to autumn for water activities and swimming
Best for: Groups and families wanting lake activities and a relaxed lunch

Overview

Lalla Takerkoust is Marrakech's lake — a broad reservoir built in the 1930s, sitting under the High Atlas about 40 minutes from the city. On a hot day it is a blast of blue: people come to swim, kayak and jet-ski, ride quads and camels along the shore, or simply settle into a lakeside restaurant for a slow lunch with the mountains reflected in the water. It is the most laid-back day trip near the city, and easily combined with the Agafay desert next door.

The dam holds back the Nfis river to form a lake ringed by low hills, with the Atlas peaks rising behind. Watersports operators along the shore hire out kayaks, pedalos and jet-skis and run short boat trips, while quad and buggy outfits use the surrounding tracks and the edge of the Agafay stone desert.

Many people come simply to eat and relax: a string of restaurants have terraces and loungers right at the water's edge, some with pools, where you can spend the afternoon over a tagine and a swim. It is popular with Marrakech families at weekends and stays quieter midweek.

Because it is so close to the city and next to Agafay, Lalla Takerkoust is flexible — a half-day chill-out, a watersports session, or one half of a combined lake-and-desert day with a sunset over the dunes to finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim in Lalla Takerkoust lake?

Yes, many people swim in the reservoir in the warmer months, and several lakeside restaurants have their own pools and loungers. Take normal open-water care, supervise children, and check locally, as levels and conditions vary through the year.

What activities are there at the lake?

Kayaking, pedalos, jet-skis and boat trips on the water, plus quad-biking, buggies and camel rides along the shore and toward Agafay. Most are hired on site by the hour, so bring cash and pick what suits your group.

How far is Lalla Takerkoust from Marrakech?

Only about 35–40 km southwest, roughly 40 minutes by road. That closeness makes it ideal for a half-day, and it sits right beside the Agafay desert, so the two combine easily into one day.

Can I combine the lake with the Agafay desert?

Easily — they are neighbours. A popular plan is watersports and lunch at the lake, then a camel ride or quad session in Agafay and a sunset over the stone desert before driving back to the city.
