Summer in Marrakech is hot — often very hot — so the game is simple: chase water and shade, and time the city for the cool of morning and evening. Do that, and summer becomes a season of river valleys, lake days and Atlantic breezes. Here's the plan for the heat.
Head for the water
The smartest summer days leave the city for somewhere cooler and wetter. The Ourika Valley and the Setti Fatma waterfalls offer cold mountain streams and pools an hour away, with lunch set right in the river.
Closer still, Lalla Takerkoust lake is the local 'beach' — flat water, lakeside restaurants and even jet-skiing for a blast of speed and spray. Forty-five minutes out, it's the easiest way to cool off.
Coast and poolside
For a full change of climate, Essaouira on the Atlantic is a breezy, blue-and-white escape — the coastal wind that frustrates sunbathers is a blessing when Marrakech is at 40°C. It's a long but rewarding day.
