Getting there
The road west from Marrakech is flat, scenic and easy, winding through argan country (watch for the tree-climbing goats and cooperative stops). You have a few options: an organised day trip by shared minibus or private car, which usually includes an argan cooperative visit; the comfortable Supratours or CTM intercity bus (around 3 hours, cheap, book ahead); or a private transfer for door-to-door flexibility. There's no train. Driving yourself is straightforward if you've hired a car.
Day trip or overnight?
As a day trip, Essaouira is very doable but long — roughly 5–6 hours of driving return leaves you 4–5 hours in town, enough for the medina, ramparts and a seafood lunch, but not to linger. If you can spare a night, do: Essaouira unwinds slowly, and its magic is in the early-morning light on the port, a sunset on the ramparts, and an evening in the relaxed medina after the day-trippers have gone. It's also a hub for windsurfing, kitesurfing and long beach walks that reward more time.
What to see and do
Essaouira is compact and walkable. Wander the UNESCO-listed medina, less frantic than Marrakech's and full of art galleries, thuya-wood workshops and craft shops. Walk the sea-battered ramparts (the Skala de la Ville) with their cannons and Atlantic views, watch the blue fishing boats unload at the port, and eat impossibly fresh grilled fish.
