Travellers crossing the shallow river toward the earthen ksar of Ait Benhaddou
Distance: About 400 km round trip
Best season: Year-round; spring and autumn most comfortable
Best for: Culture and film buffs who don't mind a long day on the road

Overview

Cross the High Atlas by the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass and you reach a different Morocco: the arid, cinematic south of red kasbahs and palm oases. The star is Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed earthen citadel that has doubled for ancient cities in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and countless others, paired with nearby Ouarzazate — 'Ouallywood' — and its film studios. It is a long but unforgettable day.

The drive is half the experience: the road climbs in hairpins to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, with viewpoints over the peaks, before dropping into the pre-Saharan landscapes on the far side. Allow around four hours each way, which is why this is the longest of the standard day trips and needs an early start.

At Aït Ben Haddou you cross the river to the ksar — a maze of packed-earth towers and kasbahs rising from the hillside. A local guide brings the film history and the traditional building to life, and the climb to the granary at the top rewards you with a sweeping view over the oasis and mountains.

Ouarzazate adds the Atlas Film Studios (with sets from major productions), the well-preserved Taourirt Kasbah, and a sense of the desert gateway this town has always been. It is a driving-heavy day but a greatest-hits of the Moroccan south; those with more time push on to overnight in the Dades or Sahara instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive to Aït Ben Haddou from Marrakech?

About four hours each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — around eight hours of driving in total. It makes for a long day (11–13 hours), so an early start is essential and comfortable shoes and snacks help.

What films were shot at Aït Ben Haddou?

Many — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Game of Thrones (as Yunkai), Prince of Persia and more. The earthen ksar and nearby Ouarzazate studios have made this Morocco's premier film location for decades.

Is it worth doing Aït Ben Haddou as a day trip?

If you can't spare an overnight, yes — you see the star sights. But the drive is long. With an extra day, continuing to overnight in the Dades Valley or pushing on to the Sahara makes the distance work much harder for you.

Do I need a guide at Aït Ben Haddou?

You can explore independently, but a local guide at the ksar is inexpensive and adds a lot — the film history, the building techniques and the best route up to the granary viewpoint. Your driver can arrange one on arrival.
