2-Day N'Kob Kasbahs Tour from Marrakech

Ask about kasbahs and most people picture Aït Ben Haddou; N'Kob is the connoisseur's answer. Tucked beneath the bare, dramatic Jebel Saghro mountains, this small town is dotted with dozens of earthen kasbahs — locals count 45 of them — many still inhabited, rising from a palmery that sees a fraction of the visitors of the main Draa Valley route. It's a quiet detour for travellers who want kasbah country without the crowds.

The drive south leaves the main Ouarzazate–Zagora road to climb toward N'Kob, at the northern foot of the Jebel Saghro range — bare, mineral mountains quite different from the palm valleys elsewhere in the south. The town itself unfolds as a scatter of fortified kasbahs among palm groves and almond trees, many built from the same rammed earth as the mountains around them.

A walking visit takes in several of the best-preserved kasbahs, some still lived in by the families who built them, along with the quiet palmery irrigated by channels from the mountain. Because N'Kob sees far fewer visitors than Aït Ben Haddou or the main Draa towns, there's a stillness and a chance for genuine conversation with residents that busier kasbah stops rarely offer.

An overnight allows an early-morning or late-afternoon walk when the light is best on the earthen walls, and — for the more adventurous — a short excursion toward the edge of Jebel Saghro itself. It suits travellers who've done the standard kasbah circuit and want something quieter, or architecture and photography enthusiasts specifically.
