A guided desert walk in Zagora's palm-fringed stony landscape
Distance: About 720 km round trip
Best season: Sept–May; too hot in high summer
Best for: Travellers who can't overnight but want a taste of the deep south

Overview

Some travellers simply can't spare a night away but still want to glimpse the deep south. This single, very long day pushes over the High Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and down into the palm-filled Draa Valley toward Zagora — the gateway to the Sahara. You won't sleep in the desert or reach big dunes, but you'll cross spectacular mountains, walk a UNESCO ksar and feel the palm-oasis world where the desert begins.

This is a dawn-to-late-night endeavour. You climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass at first light, explore Aït Ben Haddou, then follow the Draa Valley as it unspools through date palms, kasbahs and river greenery — arguably the most beautiful stretch of the whole route.

Depending on the itinerary you reach Agdz or push on toward Zagora, with a short camel ride at the desert's edge and time among the palms before turning back. It is a taster rather than a true desert trip: the point is the journey and the scenery, not a night on the sand.

Be honest with yourself about the hours — it's 14 to 15 hours door to door, most of it driving. If you possibly can, the 2-day Zagora tour adds the magical desert-camp night for only a little more time. But as a way to see the mountains and the Draa oasis when a night away isn't possible, it works.

  • The Tizi n'Tichka pass and UNESCO Aït Ben Haddou
  • The palm-lined Draa Valley — kasbahs, oases and river greenery
  • A short camel ride at the desert's edge near Agdz or Zagora
  • A sweep of the Moroccan south in a single (long) day

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit the Sahara in one day from Marrakech?

Not the big dunes — those need an overnight. But you can reach the palm-lined Draa Valley and the desert's edge near Zagora on a very long single day (14–15 hours), with Aït Ben Haddou and the Tizi n'Tichka pass along the way. It's a taster, not a true desert night.

Is the 1-day Zagora trip worth it?

If a night away is truly impossible, it's a way to see the mountains, a UNESCO ksar and the beautiful Draa oasis in a day. But it's a lot of driving for a short desert taste — if you can add one night, the 2-day tour is far more rewarding for little extra time.

Do you ride a camel on the 1-day trip?

Usually a short camel ride at the desert's edge near Agdz or Zagora is included or offered for a small fee — enough for the experience and the photo, but not the sunset trek into the dunes you'd get on an overnight tour.

How early does the 1-day trip start?

Very early — typically around 6:30am — to fit the long round trip into daylight and get you back at a reasonable (if late) evening hour. Expect a dawn pickup and a return around 9pm; it's a genuinely big day.
