Sunset Camel Ride & Medina Rooftop Dinner

Overview

This is the easiest way to tick off two Marrakech icons in one gentle evening: a camel walking you through the palm groves of the Palmeraie as the sun goes down, followed by dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Medina rooftops and, if you time it right, the flood-lit Koutoubia minaret. No long drive, no overnight — just golden hour on a camel and a good table with a view.

The Palmeraie is Marrakech's historic oasis — tens of thousands of date palms spread across the plain just north-east of the city, threaded with red-earth tracks and dotted with old kasbahs and modern retreats. It is the natural place for a gentle camel ride, close enough that you are on a camel within twenty minutes of leaving your riad, yet green and quiet enough to feel a world away from the souks.

The ride itself is calm and led on foot by a handler, so no experience is needed. You sit up on a blanketed saddle as the camels plod a loop through the groves, usually pausing at a Berber-style tent for mint tea and pastries and to swap places for photographs. Golden hour is the moment to do it — the low sun rakes through the palm trunks and turns the dust gold, and the camel silhouettes against it are the shot everyone comes home with.

As the light fades you are driven the short way back into the city for the second half of the evening: dinner on a Medina rooftop. Marrakech is a city of rooftops, and the good ones look out over a sea of terracotta terraces, satellite dishes and the odd minaret, with the Koutoubia lit up in the distance and the swifts wheeling at dusk. The meal is a relaxed Moroccan dinner — a tagine or grill, salads and pastries — timed so you catch the call to prayer echoing across the rooftops.

It is a forgiving, low-effort evening that still feels quintessentially Moroccan, which makes it a favourite first night for people who want the desert-and-city flavour without committing to a long excursion.
