An hour or so south of Marrakech, the land climbs abruptly into the High Atlas, and the temperature and scenery change with it — dusty plains give way to walnut and olive groves, terraced barley fields, red-earth villages clinging to the slopes, and streams running down from the peaks. The valleys around Imlil, Ourika and Asni are the classic day-trip destinations, offering a genuine taste of rural Amazigh (Berber) life within easy reach of the city.

The day is built around a gentle walk with a local guide, usually Amazigh himself, through the fields and villages. You follow irrigation channels and mule paths between the houses, learn how mountain families farm the terraces and manage the water, and take in views that on a clear day reach up toward Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. The pace is relaxed and suited to most fitness levels, with the effort matched to your group.

Hospitality is central. Somewhere along the way you are welcomed into a Berber home or a simple village spot for mint tea and, often, freshly made bread with argan oil, amlou or honey. The centrepiece is a picnic or slow-cooked lunch — a tagine simmered over coals, salads and seasonal fruit — eaten outdoors beside a stream or under the trees, far from the noise and heat of the Medina.

This is a day for anyone wanting cooler air, real landscape and a human connection beyond the souks, and it suits families and couples alike. Wear proper walking shoes and bring a warm layer, because the mountains are noticeably cooler than the city and weather can turn. It pairs naturally with a visit to the Setti Fatma waterfalls in Ourika or a stop at an argan cooperative on the way.
